This can happen when the hobby astronomer is peacefully sleeping in the night:

computer art by Bernhard Husler, Germany

star tracks                                                                                                                                                       field of view: 30' x 22'

The image was created alone by the computer in combination with the telescope. Exposure time around one hour.

When automatically taking a series of images of comet 240P, the controlling program lost its guiding star affected by an airplane crossing the guiding field.
After this happily seldom event, the computer program started chaotically to search for another guiding star and painted star tracks on the image.
The single points are stars still correctly guided.
